4 Simple Storage Solutions

Adding more organization to our lives has manifold advantages—it helps us easily locate and enjoy our belongings, helps preserve the items we cherish, and gives us a sense of control and order, especially helpful in today’s unpredictable world.

According to home-organizing guru, Marie Kondo, the goal of storage is to give every item in your home a designated spot to help keep your home tidy and clutter-free. Here are four simple storage ideas that may just make your life infinitely better:

1. Categorize books. While you may gather all of your books on various shelves throughout your home, Kondo suggests categorizing them by type then storing them where they make the most sense. For example, gather all of your coffee table books in the living room. Carve out a space in the kitchen for your cookbooks. Keep your nonfiction selections in your home office, and your fiction titles on a bookcase in the family room.

2. Utilize wall space. Use hanging pocket organizers to turn walls into storage space. Use them in the garage to hold small tools, in the playroom as a home for stuffed toys, dolls and action figures, and in your home office to organize supplies like envelopes, notepads, paperclips and writing utensils.

3. Maximize deep drawers. While deep drawers are a blessing for all the space they provide, they can also be a curse if not organized properly. According to Kondo, when you store items on top of each other, it makes it difficult to find things and creates a mess every time you search. Instead, fold clothes and stack them upright, then add another layer of clothes folded in a box on top. This will allow you to simply remove the box when searching for something in the bottom layer.

4. Use organizers. Keep drawers throughout your home tidy by using drawer organizers to separate contents. Whether it’s kitchen utensils, school supplies, jewelry or socks and underwear, organizers with various sized compartments will allow you to give each item its own space, making them easy to find, and maximizing space within each drawer.
